Students will learn to capture the light while painting en plein air.

Brush up on your painting skills during this outdoor acrylic class in Yosemite Valley. After you set up your supplies and decide on a subject, you’ll learn the secrets to plein air painting success, starting with the first brushstrokes. With guidance from instructor Trowzers Akimbo, you’ll learn how to shape the basics of a scene quickly, creating a blueprint for your colorful composition, and how to tackle one of the biggest challenges in outdoor painting: capturing the light before it shifts. You’ll end the class with a vivid, personal painting that will always remind you of a spring day in the park.

Beginner level: Little to no experience required, ages 12+.
Registration: $20 per day per visitor; advance registration recommended; drop-ins welcome as space is available.
Location: Happy Isles Art and Nature Center; shuttle stop #16; park at Curry Village and take the shuttle; workshops are held outside, weather and medium permitting.
Time: 10 am to 2 pm, Monday through Saturday. Please arrive at 9:45 am to purchase supplies. Please plan for extra time when taking the shuttles.
Materials: Supplies are not included in the registration fee. Supply lists are sent to registered participants once payment is received. Additional supplies are available for purchase at Happy Isles Art and Nature Center. All purchases benefit the park! Materials available for use free of charge: field easel, field stool, hardboard, water containers and paper towels.
Lodging arrangements are the responsibility of the participants.

Trowzers Akimbo

Trowzers Akimbo grew up in Venice, California, and received his bachelor’s in fine arts from California Institute of the Arts (Chouinard Art Institute). Beyond fine art, he has worked as an illustrator, graphic designer, animation director and chief creative officer. His work has received numerous awards, including an Emmy and an honorable mention in the Yosemite Renaissance show.
